Welcome to Sabrina + Stella! My name is Becky and I am a wife and mother to 2 beautiful girls (Sabrina & Stella). I was born and raised in New Orleans and moved to New York with zero connections and just $5,000 in the pursuit of a career in fashion.
I had to trust my instincts and be resourceful. When i first moved to NYC I stayed at a Holiday Inn for 2 weeks while I pounded the pavement every day looking for a job as a fashion designer. I graduated at the height of the recession in 2009 and the fashion business wasn’t booming and I didn’t go to one of the designated “Ivy League” fashion schools like Parsons, FIT, SCAD or RISD. I needed to gain experience to get my foot in the door so I ended up having 3 jobs at the same time in 3 different boroughs working 7 days a week and only 1 of those jobs was paid!!! And it was only $9 an hour! I would work one job from 9pm to 9am and then nap on the train on my way to my next job with baby wipes, toothbrush and deodorant in my bag since i would go job to job and sometimes not be able to go to my apartment for a day or two. I was paying my own rent, utilities, phone bill and student loans all while doing this (and managed to pay off my $36k in student loans before the age of 30!)
I was determined to get my foot in the door in the fashion industry and finally just around the time that $5,000 was about to run out I got my first break and went from starting at $25k a year to eventually climbing the corporate ladder into the six figures within 8 years! I have now been a professional in the fashion industry for 15 years instructing factories on how to mass-produce clothes at many stores that you see at your local mall. I would be on the train or walk down the street and see people wearing my styles! At one point that was my ultimate dream!!
Fast forward to me being a wife and mother. I have worked my butt off for years and was starting to quickly realize that I wasn’t able to take care of my girls or my home as much as I would have liked. The corporate world and the long commute became draining. I thought about the things that I loved to spend my time on the most when I had the time and quickly I thought of making pasta from scratch, cleaning and organizing projects in the house, knitting and crocheting clothes and toys for my kids, making whimsical foods and snacks for my girls, teaching them new skills, having new experiences and making memories with them and my husband.
I am glad to break the 9-5 cycle and focus on what I truly love and enjoy and share that with others along with some hacks I have learned along the way!
